Great Gumstix Overo Platform Review by Guy
Package took just 2 days from Cyprus to Australia.
Unpacked the FLOW G1.55, put in a Telstra SIM card, made a phone call, and was talking away on an FLOW/Android/Overo phone within five minutes of the courier delivering it to the front door.
Growing up in the 60's with Dick Tracy Cartoons I was sorely tempted to put a wrist band on it and wear it around. the FLOW G1.55 is good looking geek chic.
Demetris has done a great design job. The FLOW 2 should be a winner.
As for me, I finally have a development/prototype platform for the Overo Fire which blows the audience away in presentations.
Plugged in the 24 pin USB console connector, and had immediate access to the Android terminal prompt.
Very easy access to the SD socket. This is a robust case, and perfect for continual SD burn/test/reburn cycles. It's good to be confident about handling the Overo Fire inside this robust case (as good as the DogHouse for the BeagleBoard ... and much better looking :-)
If you're an Overo devotee, then this is a great piece of gear for development work, and showing off your latest embedded designs - whether they're Android applications (you'd be crazy not to get into this market) or POELA's (plain old embedded linux applications).
The FLOW G1.55 truly delivers the open source phone and operating system the others all promise. Biggest selling point for me is the Overo Fire. Gumstix have done a great job with this COM, and Demetris has made it shine.
A great opportunity to program to the metal - so many great gadgets all on one motherboard attached to a super charged CPU/DSP/SGX chip. it doesn't get much better than this. What other "phone" allows you to change the OS with an easily accessible SD card? who cares. i gotta FLOW!
